Abstract of the lecture

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common type of anaemia. Frequent blood donors have an increased risk of iron depletion. Therefore, haemoglobin screening of a donor is done prior to donation to prevent an anaemic donor from donating. But the haemoglobin concentration does not always reflect the donor’s iron status accurately.

In case of lowering iron stores, a latent iron deficiency (LID) is manifested before the actual anaemia occurs. During the latent deficiency, haemoglobin and RBC indices are normal. Early detection is crucial but difficult when using conventional haematological and biochemical parameters. For this reason, the advanced clinical parameter reticulocyte haemoglobin equivalent ( RET-H_e) is evaluated to give an early and accurate information on a donor’s risk to develop LID. This provides an opportunity to take appropriate and timely interventions like dietary changes or supplementation to prevent development of a clinical anaemia.
